Gel Filtration: Plant Pigments

This technique allows the students to take advantage of differences in molecular charge and structure in order to bring about a separation of pigments found in plants. This kit will provide the students the opportunity of packing a chromatographic column, and then calibrating it. They can also observe a separation of anthocyanin, carotene, chlorophyll and exanthophyll form a mixture of these compounds. The students will first extract each substance from fresh plant materials and then will separate the pigmented compounds based upon molecular charge and structure differences rather than molecular charge and differences.
